Over time, and through my associations with the towns of Chatham and Portsmouth, I developed a specialist interest in naval dockyards, but especially the important role they play within the economy of a country and the working conditions of those employed within the yards. Apart from my work on the naval yards of Chatham and Portsmouth together with the other British naval yards, I have also explored the supporting infrastructure of other major navies of the world, concentrating on the 18th century.
